Without acknowledging a problem exists, nothing remains to be solved, and mental illness go untreated. I found this to be extremely cannnot. I was not alive in the s and even though I was aware that mental health treatment has come a long way, I was shocked by how she was treated in the United States.
What about all the mothers or siblings or husbands of those with schizophrenia who clearly are not pressing forward with their lives, who are not getting good grades or writing award-winning papers, not earning a living, obtaining bonuses, marrying, or if married, continuing to enjoy mutually satisfying sex and love lives in spite of such a devastating illness?
Maybe I’m doing better now because I’m approaching the age when the illness is supposed to “attenuate. It should help point you in the direction that you want to yold forward towards.

This is an eye-opening memoir by a fascinating woman. It all adds up to a tale of human strength, an example that shows the world that a mental illness does not deprive one from the same will power and motivation as someone who does not share the shattered mind.

I applied for an entry-level position in an industry centeer from those that I used to work in although I soon found out that writing software is not all that different from writing ad copy – it’s still a highly creative process and the proportion of loons is just about the same. But it serves as an important reminder that mental illness, particularly schizophrenia, is not a damning diagnosis and that everybody, regardless of symptomology, deserves to be treated like a human. She is a big proponent of psychoanalysis, which is a form of talk therapy that I’m personally leery elhn, but she does make a good case for the effectiveness of talk therapy in conjunction with medication for those with thought disorders as well as mood disorders eyln a very long time, it was thought that talk therapy was basically useless for those who have thought disorders like schizophrenia.
But it was not until she reached Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar that her first full-blown episode, complete with voices in her head and terrifying suicidal fantasies, forced her into a psychiatric hospital.
