HP ScanJet G4050 Photo Scanner – flatbed scanner Series

Scanjet G Photo Flatbed Scanner is rated 4. I have been using this scanner for about five years and scan color photos, black and white photos, slides, color, and black and white negatives, from 35mm to large format for a local historical foundation. I do not use the provided software, because I had read that it was not very good, and, after trying it just to see, I defaulted to the software that I had already been using for scanning with prior scanner, VueScan Pro.

ViewScan Pro provides countless options and allows setting up profiles for particular scanning tasks. Snow Leopard users beware of this scanner. It is now late November and the HP website still states that a driver for this scanner which will work on SL will be available in late October Well, it is still not available and no solution in sight.

It specificaions be a great scanner at a great price, but what difference does it make if it doesn’t work on your system? It’s a shame that the company is not able to provide a working solution in time.

Epson did a much better job on this. I’m not even commenting on the poor software which is provided.

I sold my Epson for this so I wont have to scan half a negative twice then stitch them together again. Wow, I wish I hadnt sold my EpsonThis thing is total garbage. The scans are just downright terrible.

Cannot handle highlights so it just blows it, cannot handle shadow detail so it blankets it in blackness. And thats just black and white. I scanned some Velvia, does a horrible job. Made beautiful velvia that I can see with my own eyes look like trash. And yes, the focus is just downright bad. I see tack sharp in my negatives, this thing sees nothing but bokeh.

Software, like it was designed by someone who just dont care. I shouldnt have sold my old scanner, the glass was scratched and still did a better job than this scanner fresh out of the box. Must be a software screw up on the Black and White side. Useless on anything but a perfectly exposed and processed neg with absolutely normal contrast. Later you can take the image into Photoshop and correct density and contrast.

This thing is utterly useless for anything other flatbed scans from prints. Less than great on color.

The software defaults after every scqnjet, loosing all your custom settings. Did I mention this thing was a waste of time. Don’t waste your time. I’ve already replaced mine. Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from Good option for 4×5 film I wanted something that could scan 4×5 color negatives and transparencies decently, not museum quality but good sspecifications to make a respectable 16×20 print.

This one does the job and costs several fold less than the Epson that seems to be the next cheapest option. I could not get it to scan transparencies using h4050 standard Linux driver SANE and had to dig out an old Windows XP netbook and install the HP scanner software, which is a little clunky but not terrible for occasional use. Linux with Vuescan pro software may also work, but I did not feel like buying it.

In short, this scanner suited my needs and saved me several hundred dollars. You might consider it if you shoot large-format film and if specifictaions can live with the limitations of a flatbed scanner.

I just can’t believe how well the slides came out. The operation is so simple that my grandson f4050 scan as well as I. I have owned the scanner for about 6 months now and really can’t find anything about it that I don’t like – it’s great, couldn’t be any happier!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from HP G scanner a winner This scanner has a great ability to scan 16 slides at a time, all good results. Easy set up, only gripesthe power and USB cables a little too short.

Also the power on light is a very, very, small g400 lite that can not be noticed from a side angle, only when looking down on scanner. Still this as faster and better all round than the last Epson scanner I had Be the first to review this item. See any errors scaanjet this page?

Approximately 8″ x 10″ sufficient for sixteen 35mm mounted slides, thirty 35mm negative frames, 2 medium format frames, or one sheet 4 x 5″ film.
